Vitamin Basics & Tips
Vitamin E plays a vital role in skin health for both humans and pets. As a fat-soluble antioxidant, it helps protect cell membranes from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. In dogs, topical or dietary Vitamin E may soothe dry, itchy skin by reinforcing the skin barrier and reducing inflammation.
When using Vitamin E oil for pets, dosage is crucial. The NRC recommends 2-4 IU of Vitamin E per pound of body weight daily for dogs. Always consult a veterinarian before supplementing, as excessive amounts can interfere with blood clotting. For topical applications, cold-pressed Vitamin E oil (d-alpha-tocopherol) is preferred over synthetic versions for better absorption.
Signs of Vitamin E deficiency in animals include muscle weakness, reproductive issues, and eye degeneration. While commercial pet foods typically contain adequate amounts, dogs with skin conditions or those eating homemade diets might benefit from supplements. Pairing Vitamin E with omega-3 fatty acids can enhance its anti-inflammatory effects for skin health.
