Power of Vitamin D: A Vitamin D Book That Contains The Most Scientific, Useful And Practical Information About Vitamin D - Hormone D
Recently I got my vitamin D level checked and it was low. On my next appointment, I had a long list of questions for my doctor, who answered some of my questions and then recommended this book to me. And I am so grateful that he did. In "Power of Vitamin D", I found answers to all of my questions I had, about vitamin D (which is actually a hormone, as I learnt in this book).
The book covers everything you need to know about vitamin D. Dr. Zaidi surely has a knack to explains complex medical concepts to a lay person, like myself. In particular, I loved how he clarifies important points by describing actual case studies from his clinical practice.
The book is so easy to read that I forgot I was reading a medical book. It gives you clear answers that you can implement right away. For example, I was so confused about "how much vitamin D to take?" There are so many conflicting opinions from the so called experts on vitamin D. In this book, Dr. Zaidi explains, "How much vitamin D a person gets from sun varies from person to person." He also makes it very clear that foods contain very small amounts of vitamin D. Therefore, you have to rely on vitamin D supplement, the dose of which varies from person to person. His strategy is so scientific, yet very simple: Have your vitamin D level checked, refer to the table provided in the book, and find out exactly how much vitamin D supplement you need to take. No guess work, no confusion. It does not get any simpler.
Dr. Zaidi also clarifies the issue of vitamin D toxicity is a very scientific manner. The health benefits of vitamin D are discussed in length. He not only cites numerous scientific studies, but also includes his own clinical data. I was very much impressed with his scientific yet very practical approach.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who seriously wants to learn about vitamin D and does not want to get lost in the confusion.
Vitamin Basics & Tips
Vitamin D, often called the "sunshine vitamin," plays a critical role in bone health, immune function, and mood regulation. Unlike other vitamins, it functions as a hormone, influencing over 200 genes. While sunlight exposure triggers its production, factors like skin tone, geographic location, and sunscreen use drastically reduce synthesis. Foods like fatty fish and fortified dairy provide minimal amounts, making supplementation essential for many.
Testing vitamin D levels via blood tests (measuring 25-hydroxyvitamin D) is crucial, as deficiency symptoms—fatigue, bone pain, frequent infections—are often vague. Optimal levels range between 30-50 ng/mL, though individualized targets may vary. Dr. Zaidi emphasizes personalized dosing: low levels may require high initial doses (5,000-10,000 IU/day), followed by maintenance doses based on retesting. Contrary to myths, toxicity is rare and typically occurs only with extremely high prolonged doses (>40,000 IU/day).
Vitamin D works synergistically with magnesium and vitamin K2 for proper calcium absorption and arterial health. Groups at higher risk for deficiency include older adults, darker-skinned individuals, and those with limited sun exposure. Regular testing every 3-6 months ensures levels stay balanced, avoiding both deficiency and unnecessary excess.
