Quality AREDS 2 formula with effective Lutein/Zeaxanthin doses, but contains unnecessary additives like Zinc Oxide.
Prioritizes core eye nutrients Lutein/Zeaxanthin effectively, but loses points for non-essential additives. Still earns 4 stars for key ingredients' quality.
This review is from Amazon.com for product:
AREDS 2 Eye Vitamins - VisiVite Vitamins for Eye Health Without Vitamin E - Eye Vitamins for Seniors - Lutein and Zeaxanthin Supplements - 60 Capsules
The AREDS 2 Eye Vitamins seems to have the 2 main ingredients needed in a quality form and with a good dosage. I always get nervous when a lot of other ingredients are added and the main ingredients are not the focus, especially when some of those ingredients are worthless or not necessary for the purpose intended. The Zinc Oxide is not needed or necessary and the Alpha Lipoic Acid is such a small dose, not sure why it's in there and it's not even the R form. The Vitamin C in Ascorbic Acid form is pretty much worthless. The pills are easy enough to swallow and there is no smell. This could have been a superior product if the manufacturer would simply focus on the main, core ingredients instead of throwing everything into the mix but I gave it 4 stars since the 2 main ingredients, Lutein and Zeaxanthin are of good quality type and necessary for the eyes.
Vitamin Basics & Tips
Lutein and Zeaxanthin, the primary carotenoids in AREDS 2 formulations, accumulate in the macula to filter harmful blue light and neutralize free radicals. The optimal ratio of 5:1 (Lutein to Zeaxanthin) shown in studies matches many quality supplements. Zinc Oxide's inclusion remains controversial - while zinc supports retinal health, excessive amounts may interfere with copper absorption.
Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA), present here in small doses, functions as both water- and fat-soluble antioxidant. The "R-form" version mentioned in reviews refers to the biologically active enantiomer, with studies suggesting R-ALA has 2-5x greater bioavailability than standard ALA. Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) criticism relates to its instability; buffered forms like Calcium Ascorbate may offer better absorption.
When choosing eye vitamins, prioritize products with AREDS 2-approved dosages: 10mg Lutein, 2mg Zeaxanthin, 500mg Vitamin C (as ascorbate), 400IU Vitamin E, and 80mg Zinc. Always check for "non-GMO marigold extract" sources of carotenoids and consider separate omega-3 supplementation for complete eye health support.
