Interesting that this product is made in Japan. Since I don’t have a Geiger counter handy, I trust that it’s manufactured nowhere near the location of the nuclear disaster at Fukushima. That forsaken place is still leaking radiation. I can only give this item 4 stars because of two shortcomings. First the description is misleading. If you know a few things about medicinal chemistry, you would know that d-alpha tocopherol is the only active isomer (structural form) of vitamin E, when taken internally. Even though the label mentions the other forms of vitamin E that are inside the capsules, it obscures a fair comparison with other companies’ products. The label doesn't properly describe what these type of capsules contain. A correct description would be to ADD the fact that the contents are “Mixed Tocopherols.” Also, although that it is not a strict legal requirement, these capsules do not state a “Best if Used by” or an “Expiration Date.” There is only a lot number on the label, and the inclusion of an expiration date is an industry standard that is upheld by most all reputable manufacturers and distributors of “nutritional supplements.” Don’t get me wrong. Know this from an experienced pharmacist: This is actually a very good product. It’s just has a problem with poor label design and an unprofessional presentation. Sorry about such a long rant, but people in my profession get emotional with rhese kind of issues.
Vitamin Basics & Tips
Vitamin E, a fat-soluble antioxidant, exists in eight chemical forms, with d-alpha tocopherol being the most biologically active for human health. Unlike synthetic dl-alpha tocopherol, natural d-alpha tocopherol is better absorbed and retained. Mixed tocopherols, which include beta, gamma, and delta forms alongside alpha, offer broader antioxidant benefits but are often undervalued in supplement labeling. Proper labeling transparency, including "Mixed Tocopherols" declarations, helps consumers compare products accurately.
Expiration dates on supplements are not federally mandated in many countries but are considered industry best practices. Reputable manufacturers include them to guarantee potency, as nutrients like vitamin E degrade over time. Storing supplements away from heat and light preserves efficacy. Fukushima-related radiation fears for Japanese products, while understandable, are mitigated by strict export quality controls, though independent testing provides additional reassurance.
When choosing vitamin E supplements, prioritize brands specifying d-alpha tocopherol content, expiration dates, and third-party testing. For topical use, mixed tocopherols enhance skin benefits, but oral supplements focusing on alpha-tocopherol better address systemic antioxidant needs. Always consult healthcare providers to align dosage with individual health goals.
