User reports coughing from Vitamin C with Saccharomyces cerevisiae; warns immunocompromised individuals.
Vitamin C product triggered coughing due to Saccharomyces cerevisiae; caution advised for immunocompromised users.
This review is from Amazon.com for product:
Garden of Life Vitamin Code Raw Vitamin C - 60 Capsules, 500mg Whole Food Vitamin C, Fruit & Veggie Blend, Probiotics, Vitamin C Capsules, C Vitamins Supplements for Adults, Vegan, Gluten Free
It’s not a bad product. But I would suggest you stop using Saccharomyces cerevisiae in your products. I started taking this when I first got it and I started coughing uncontrollably every time I took it. I didn’t realize I was coughing from this supplement. But in rare occasions saccharomyces cereviiae can cause lung issues, pneumonia, for people w/low immunity. I’m one of those people and didn’t realize that would affect my health. Please do your research before purchasing.
Vitamin Basics & Tips
Vitamin C, a water-soluble nutrient, plays a vital role in collagen synthesis, immune function, and antioxidant protection. While supplements are popular, individuals with sensitivities or compromised immunity should scrutinize inactive ingredients like Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a yeast sometimes used in fermentation processes. Though generally recognized as safe, rare cases link it to fungal infections in vulnerable populations, such as those with chronic illnesses or undergoing immunosuppressive therapies.
Natural dietary sources of vitamin C—citrus fruits, bell peppers, and broccoli—are less likely to cause adverse reactions. The recommended daily intake is 75-90mg for adults, but excessive supplementation (over 2,000mg) may lead to digestive discomfort. Vitamin C enhances iron absorption, making it beneficial when paired with plant-based iron sources like spinach. However, its instability in heat and light means cooked or stored foods lose potency over time.
For immunocompromised individuals, consulting healthcare providers before using supplements is critical. Alternatives like hypoallergenic vitamin C (e.g., ascorbic acid without additives) or liposomal formulations may reduce risks. Always check labels for allergens and consider third-party testing certifications to ensure product safety and quality.
