Vitamin A bottle packaging hazard with loose tablets; Safer Carlson Labs alternative recommended.
Loose vitamin A tablets from flawed packaging pose pet risks; Freeda users prefer Carlson Labs' safer softgels.
This review is from Amazon.com for product:
Freeda Kosher Vitamin A Palmitate - Retinyl Palmitate Pure Vitamin A 15,000 IU - Vitamin A Supplement to Support Eye, Vision & Immune Health - Vit A Vitamin Supplements - Vitamina A - 250 Tablets
A tightly packed, crinkly plastic sheet occupied the inside top half of my bottle. When I removed the plastic, a few tablets, which apparently had lodged inside folds of the plastic, spilled onto the floor. We buy vitamin A for our dog, and luckily I was able to pick up the tablets before she got them, since too much vitamin A can be harmful for her. Just be careful if you open this product with a pet or small child around.
I expect the Freeda is otherwise a good product, but I recommend the cheaper alternative, Carlson Labs Vitamin A Palmitate, 15000 IU, 240 Softgels . In fact, the only reason we bought the Freeda is because the Carlson Labs product was unavailable.
Vitamin Basics & Tips
Vitamin A plays crucial roles in vision, immune function, and cellular communication, but requires careful dosage management. While humans typically get sufficient vitamin A through diet (liver, carrots, spinach), pet owners must exercise extra caution as animals have lower toxicity thresholds. The FDA recommends 900 mcg RAE daily for adult males and 700 mcg RAE for females. Excess vitamin A can cause hypervitaminosis A, manifesting in dizziness, nausea, and even liver damage in severe cases.
Proper supplement storage proves vital for pet safety. Child-resistant containers and temperature-controlled environments (59-77°F) prevent accidental ingestion and nutrient degradation. When switching supplements, verify IU measurements match - 15,000 IU equals 4,500 mcg RAE. Natural retinoids from animal sources differ from plant-based beta-carotene conversion, affecting absorption rates. Consult veterinarians before administering human-grade supplements to pets, as species-specific formulations exist.
Consumers should inspect supplement packaging upon delivery. Compressed cotton inserts or desiccant packs often provide better tablet stabilization than plastic sheeting. For households with pets, consider keeping supplements in locked cabinets and immediately cleaning any spills. The National Animal Poison Control Center reports 12% of pet poisonings involve human supplements, with fat-soluble vitamins like A posing particular storage dangers.
